Closer To The Heart felt like a good song to cover because firstly, the lyrics seem to be right in line with my music and themes….it seemed like a natural bridge between my musical interests of hair metal and folk. Secondly, I was looking for a song with high bombastic vocals that I could attempt to bring down into my quiet, low range and Geddy Lee has THE highest most bombastic voice. I think it becomes a different song in a lower gentler register. And thirdly, Rush epitomizes the art of hard rock maximalism: from massive 60 piece drum kits to flowing open kimonos to epic long winding songs where the bass player plays keyboard pads with his feet. I, on the other hand, epitomize the art of minimalism and I thought the contrast would be interesting. I’ve loved Rush since I was a boy. When I was 12 my older brother went to their concert and brought me home a Rush T-Shirt with an owl on the front. I wore it constantly. When I was recording this version I felt like I was wearing that shirt again.” Mason Jennings
