A mother with a newly-born baby laments that she does not know the identity of the father, until a man rises from the sea telling her that the boy is his. The stranger is a silkie — a changeling from the rocky island of Sule Skerry that takes the form of a man on the land and a seal in the sea. He gives the woman a purse full of gold and takes the child, but issues the chilling prediction that she is destined to marry a gunner who will kill both him and their son...
