In the Bleak Midwinter | Christmas Best

In the Bleak Midwinter
Music: Gustav Holst; Text: Christina G. Rossetti
Arrangement: Mack Wilberg

Famed English poet Christina Rossetti wrote this text in the early 1870s, reportedly at the request of the magazine Scribner’s Monthly. But it was not published until 1904, more than ten years after her death. Gustav Holst, whose later works would include the ever-popular orchestral suite, The Planets, wrote the hymn tune “Cranham” especially for Rossetti’s poem, and this new Christmas hymn was first published in the 1906 English Hymnal.
