Dana Fuchs | Bible Baby

I wrote this song for my first album, "Lonely For a Lifetime", shortly after moving from the south to NYC. My oldest brother Don, who has since passed away, was one of my music heroes as a child. After I moved from the south, Don got mired in organized religion in a town that was known for burning recorded music. Don believed he was born again, only to be later abandoned by the church he joined because he suffered from mental illness. He ended up taking everything he owned into the woods; his car, guitar and even the clothes on his back and set them all on fire to prove his devotion to the church and to God. Fortunately, my dear late Aunt Sally got in her car days later and drove from her home in NJ to pick up Don on the side of the road in our hometown of Wildwood, Florida. She drove him back to NJ, where he lived out the rest of his life. Thankfully, Don and I became very close again and I was able to be by his side at the end of his young life. Thank you Aunt Sally. This one's for you and my dear Bible Baby big bro, Don. I miss you both so much but you live on in my heart and my music. Love, Dana

Lyrics
Bible Baby
by Dana Fuchs

Mama’s first baby, barely two—Daddy needed the bottle more than you
Praise the Lord—Hallelujah—you’re alive

Mama got a rap sheet keepin’ you fed—said there was nothing to do instead
Praise the Lord—Hallelujah—you’re alive

Now run off to your room
Put that Bible in your hand
Don’t expect to see you soon
Looks like you’ve found the promise land
Praise the Lord-Hallelujah-you’re alive

Barely 17 and a voice of gold—gave up the guitar to save your soul
Praise the Lord—Hallelujah—you’re alive

Mama keeps saying everything’s cool—but you know different from the kids in school
Praise the Lord—Hallelujah—you’re alive

Chorus

Now the world just thinks you’re crazy
The preachers say you’re lazy
But glory to the Highest—glory to the Highest

Mama’s poor baby at 32- Daddy’s still drunk, he blames you
Praise the Lord—Hallelujah—you’re alive
Gave up on a world you never saw—Gave your life to a God that ignored it all
Praise the Lord—Hallelujah—you’re alive

Chorus
