Our time is defined by division
We have a new tendency to assassinate each others character
From a difference of opinion
We should learn to see each others hearts again
And form a kind of spiritual coalition
Not based on political issues
Or the hot button topics of the day
Cause though we may disagree
We can come together anyway.
And I know it’s a naive sentiment
The concept of unity and peace and love
And I understand too the way people in some ways love the blood sport of division
The ego gets to flex when someone else is the bad guy
And we get to escape perhaps from our own self hatred by casting that spell on another
But that said the division in our world is turning cartoonish
And what’s worse is it feels led by propaganda campaigns that we all should be embarrassed for falling for
On either side of any equation.

I was surprised that even the song Rich men north of Richmond stirred up so much division and debate
When from my point of view it was essentially a plea for empathy for the working people who can’t get a leg up in a world where the fix is in.
Love it or hate it or be indifferent about it
But when a song like that stirs up such pathos for further political divide I can see we need to unify
And see how most of us want the best for each other and are divided mainly on opinions about how we get there
But the heart and soul are not so far apart.
For songwriters out there
Let’s start a campaign for songs unify
Here’s a bit of the one I wrote yesterday
Called UNITY NOW
If you feel inspired write a different one and hashtag #unitynow
I think we can change the spirit of divide and conquer and push back with musical force writing some jams about unity!
Peace and love (though it be naive) peace and love just the same
