it was a rare privilege to work with Dionne Farris. she is a true vocal painter. so much so, that in 23 years i’ve never felt the need to record this song. it was the first of mine to be released into the world and i’m thankful to her for the opportunity she gave me. i was asked to do my take on this ditty, which gave me the chance to add musical elements i thought too heavy to put on the original.
it is an exalted experience to feel and hear people from all walks of life sing the same song in one room. penny with a hole in it (its original title) is a gift that comes back to me each time i hear you sing it.
