Felix Cartal - When I'm In Need [full audio]

When I'm In Need was one of the first things I wrote post-pandemic after I started playing shows again. While a large part of what I wrote during that time might be described as "somewhat depressing (feel less they say)" this was the complete opposite. In a way it's my love letter to making fun dance music, something pure for people to dance to. This was something I had missed (more than I had realized) without touring for ~2 years.

There's a Daft Punk quote that i'm sure i'm misremembering where they talk about making Discovery. They wanted to remove pretentiousness and make something they as kids would enjoy. I like this thought, making something for our younger selves.

I'd be remiss to not mention the fact that this song interpolates Ray Charles' "I've Got A Woman." The younger version of me would never dream that we would be able to clear the use of this in a song, so for that I am grateful. And ultimately I think that's what makes this record feel special to me. It's an homage to the dance floors that I've missed, without pretentiousness, flipping a sample into something that feels unique to me. At my core that's what dance music is all about. Remixing to infinity (and beyond!).
