Ring Those Christmas Bells | Christmas Best

Ring Those Christmas Bells
Music: Gus Levene; Text: Marvin Fisher
Arrangement: Ryan Murphy

Gus Levene was a prolific arranger and orchestrator for both Broadway and Hollywood in the mid-20th century. His breakthrough came when he wrote the arrangement of Irving Berlin’s “White Christmas” for Bing Crosby in 1942, a recording that became the best-selling single of all time. Levene later went on to orchestrate the soundtracks for more than 70 films including The King and I, Carousel, and The Music Man. Levene’s fellow arranger and songwriter Marvin Fisher worked with such popular singers as Nat King Cole, Peggy Lee, and Rosemary Clooney. In 1953, Levene and Fisher collaborated on “Ring Those Christmas Bells,” first recorded by Peggy Lee that year and then followed by Fred Waring in subsequent years. Ryan Murphy’s sumptuous and entertaining arrangement of “Ring Those Christmas Bells” showcases, of course, the Bells at Temple Square.
