Shawn Colvin & Judy Collins - "Since You've Asked" (Live at The Metropolitan Museum Of Art, 2012)

Wishing a very Happy 84th Birthday to my friend, Judy Collins. I’ve been listening and covering and imitating Judy since the 60’s, thanks to my parents’ love of her artistry. I wanted to sing like her, play guitar and piano like her. Because of her, I heard songs by Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan, Stephen Stills, Phil Ochs, Joan Baez, Joni Mitchell, Stephen Sondheim. More importantly, I listened to the incredible songs that Judy wrote, like “My Father”, “Born to the Breed”, “Song For Martin”.

Here we are at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in July of 2012, duetting on her splendid song, “Since You’ve Asked”, just me and Judy and her piano. It was one of the thrills of my life. I know her voice like the back of my hand. My parents were, of course, beside themselves, which was really the best thing of all. We never could have imagined this. (Well, maybe I did.)

Thank you, Judy, for a dream come true, for your work and inspiration, for continuing to hit the road to keep sharing your magic with us. I long to follow in your footsteps. Born to the breed. ❤️
