Why KISS' Management THREATENED Matt Cameron of PEARL JAM

Matt Cameron of Pearl Jam recalls receiving a Cease and Desist Letter from Kiss' Management

What a week Howard Stern had. He had Pearl Jam on his show and then in a day I thought I’d never see, the president of the united states showed up on his show. It was such a big get, howard actually left his basement to interview him. It was during the Pearl Jam interview, the band talked about their history and performed a handful of songs. During the interview drummer Matt Cameron would reveal a funny story he had about the band Kiss when he was a kid.

Growing up, Cameron was a huge Kiss fan, so much so that he played in a kiss cover band and got to meet his rock heroes. He’d reveal during the interview that he played in the kiss cover band when he was a teenager like 13 or 14 and they played high school parties. It turned out Cameron’s dad was friends with the head of the stagehand union in San Diego. San diego is where the drummer was born and grew up. San Diego was also frontman Eddie Vedder’s old stomping grounds before he joined pearl jam. Getting back to the story, it was during Kiss’ Alive tour in the mid 70’s Cameron went with two of his friends in his band and his dad to see Kiss do a soundcheck at teh San Diego sports arena. They would bring with them their photo album of their kiss cover band, with their costumes being made by Cmaeron’s mother. They even tried to replicate kiss’ light show as well, but cameron would admit it was and i quote janky, low rent, horrible. During that soundcheck they would get to meet Kiss frontman and guitarist paul stanley. They showed stanley their photo album and told them they were in a kiss cover band. Fast forward to 4-6 months later Cameron and his friends get a letter from Aucoin management, the company that manages Kiss. They got excited only to open the letter and learn it was a cease and desist letter from teh band’s lawyer. It turned out that Cameron’s cover band was simply called Kiss. After they got the letter they’d change their name to Kiss with imitation in parentheses.
