Public Enemy - The Making of ‘Fight The Power’ (Vevo Footnotes)

When it comes to cornerstone moments in hip-hop, Public Enemy's "Fight the Power" is right up there. Shot by Spike Lee to coincide with his 1989 opus 'Do The Right Thing,' it became one of the most impactful rap videos of all time, fierce in the power of its protest, and proud in its acknowledgement of culture and community. We kick off our celebration of hip-hop's 50th anniversary with an exclusive interview with PE's rapper-writer Chuck D, who explains how he was inspired by the Isley Brothers' 1975 hit, "Fight The Power," and influenced by the "NYC Black talk radio station WLIB." Jump in to find out how Lee got the idea for the rally in Brooklyn's Bed-Stuy neighborhood, and how Chuck "knew they were doing something historical."

“Fight the Power” served as the theme for Spike Lee’s Do the Right Thing and is featured on Public Enemy’s 1990 album Fear of a Black Planet.
