“Let’s make sure that we are never satisfied with lopsided, simplistic worship that misses altogether the unsearchable riches of Christ.” – Conrad Mbewe
Christ must be at the center of our hymnody. As Conrad Mbewe explains in this clip from Sing! 2019, hymns should lead us “to meditate on the Lord Jesus Christ in the length, breadth, height and depth of how he has revealed himself in Scripture to us.” Christ humbled himself to death and was exalted to the heights of heaven for our salvation (Phil 2:6-11). We sing because there is nothing else, no one else more worthy.
And yet, we do not merely affirm the praiseworthiness of Christ on an abstract, intellectual level. It is much more personal than that. We sing because we have tasted the sweetness of Christ’s love poured out on us. Forgiveness. Adoption. Christ’s righteousness imputed to us. His Spirit to dwell in us. These gifts, and many more, draw hymns of praise from our hearts—a hymnody fixed on the glories of Christ.
