Why do we never learn?

In the quiet of Easter 2022, amidst the serenity of my cabin retreat, I found solace in my guitar and sound card. This respite was shadowed by the recent outbreak of war in Ukraine, a jarring reminder of conflict's grim reality in our modern world. How, I pondered, could such strife arise in Europe in the year 2022? History has repeatedly shown that war benefits no one, yet it seems humanity struggles to learn from its past mistakes.

Amidst this turmoil, I channeled my confusion and despair into songwriting, resulting in "Why Do We Never Learn?". Initially, I shelved the song after its completion, partly due to my own critical self-assessment, and partly because the act of writing it served as a cathartic release for my thoughts.

However, as the shadows of hopelessness and despair re-emerged in recent months, I felt a compelling urge to share this song. I may never truly understand the harrowing experience of being in the midst of war, of having beloved children, friends, or family members cruelly snatched away by conflict. Innocent lives, caught in a turmoil they did not choose.

I am acutely aware that a song can only offer so much in the face of such immense suffering. Yet, I believe that any effort to highlight the futility and devastation of war is worth pursuing. If this song can serve as a reminder, however small, of the need for peace and the lessons unlearned from history, then its purpose is fulfilled.

Watch, listen, and reflect. Let us hope for a future where the lessons of the past are not just learned, but heeded.

Love,
Kvitland

Lyrics:

Why can’t we learn from our fathers mistakes?
Why can’t we learn from what we did before?
What does it take before all of us wakes?
It takes a day to crush, a life to restore

Why can’t we learn from the history books?
It’s like they don’t even matter anymore
Why can’t we listen to John Lennon's hooks?
Why do we hide our love, but broadcast our war?

Why do we never learn?

Why can’t we learn from our neighbors' mistakes?
Why do we do it all over again?
Why can’t we learn from films that we make?
We all know what will happen at the end

Do we need something to chase every day?
Will we have oxygen left for our lungs?
What kind of rules did we choose to obey
when our children see less nipples than guns?

Why do we never learn?

We have the power deep inside
To change our fate, to turn the tide
To Break the cycle, it’s not too late
A better world, let's co-create

Let's be the change we want to find
It's time to leave the hate behind
Our actions matter, big or small
They'll echo out and break down walls

Why do we never learn?

It's up to us to make a choice
It’s up to us to use our voice
Let's be the change we want to see
It starts with you, it starts with me
