George's Journal - Day 86 + 87: Nashville Business

March 27th, 2024

A whirlwind day of emotions and travel, a journey that took us literally back in time as we crossed the International Date Line. Starting in Brisbane, we said our heartfelt goodbyes at the crack of dawn, with the difficult parting from my wife weighing heavily on me, knowing it'll be three weeks until we're reunited.

Saying goodbye to Baba, who was adorably self-conscious about her hair, and my mum, who couldn't hold back her tears, added layers of emotion to our departure. Despite the heartache, there was a light moment as we hoped for business class upgrades on our way to the airport—a bit of luxury to ease the long journey back.

At the airport, our dreams of business class were briefly dashed by the steep $2500 upgrade fee. However, we managed to secure Premium Economy upgrades, a small victory. Persistence paid off at the boarding gate, where a more affordable $899 business class upgrade became available. With the prospect of returning to an apartment without electricity, I indulged in this comfort, ensuring at least part of my journey back was in style.

We landed in San Francisco around four hours before we left Brisbane, thanks to the peculiar magic of time travel across the Date Line. The Polaris Lounge, voted the best First Class lounge in the world, was my haven between flights, offering a chance for a refreshing shower and a hearty breakfast.

Finally, our last leg brought us to Nashville, where Tessie the dog's enthusiastic welcome reminded me of the joys of coming home. But the reality of no electricity at my apartment brought a challenging end to our travels. Alone in the dark, lit only by battery-powered candles, I was back—not quite as I had planned, but ready to tackle the challenges ahead.

Until tomorrow,

G.Shep xx
