Laura Branigan - Self Control, Interview & Satisfaction - American Bandstand (1984)

Laura Branigan visits for third time the musical TV show American Bandstand produced and hosted by Dick Clark. This segment was aired on ABC on Saturday June 9, 1984. On this ocassion Laura promotes her third studio album "Self Control" released on March of that year. The title track at this moment - June 1984 - became a hit on the U.S. charts and many other countries in America and Europe. She set into motion all those dancers in the studio with the powerful rhythm of her biggest hit "Self Control". After an interview with Dick about singing and becoming an actress, having just completed work on her upcoming film, "Mugsy's Girls", due out at the end of the summer. Laura is about to embark on her summer tour of the United States and the rest of the world. Then she sang the sensual and danceable "Satisfaction".
In my opinion, this was her best performance on AB. It's my all time favorite Branigan's performance on TV. In short, the aesthetics of her, her performance and the whole scene is sublime. Enjoy and share!.

* A fan curiosity: Laura is wearing her classic and iconic belt, perhaps one of her favorites, for its strange form. It is best known because she wore it on the "Self Control" music video but certainly she used it since 1983 and then in several concerts and TV performances around the world, specially during her tour in 1984.

Dick: How are you?!
(Laura wipes lipstick off of Dick)
Dick: The evidence, the evidence.
You know what I was just about is... (Looking stage right) Will you control yourself?
Laura: (Wagging a finger to stage right) Self control.
Dick: There's a young salivating man over there... the way he's...
Laura: (beckons the man with her finger)
Dick: You didn't hear the comments over there. Which I'll now repeat to you. Uhhhh Everybody knows you sing well. But, everybody says, "Boy, she looks great" Are you happy person?
Laura: Yes, very happy.
Dick: 'Cause I... Things have been going so well for you.
Laura: Nods
Dick: Do you feel fortunate?
Laura: I do. I...
Dick: 'cause you worked hard.
Laura: I worked my butt off. I feel real fortunate. Because, I think I'm happy to be born with a voice.
Dick: Well that's good. I want to change the subject, here. Because, I hear you're going to be an actress. And, the rumor is now, that you will not sing, but you'll become an actress.
Laura: I'd never stop singing. Ever!
Dick: Alright, we've dismissed that rumor, but are you acting now?
Laura: I just finished a film with Ruth Gordon. I will be out at the end of the summer.
Dick: What's it called?
Laura: Mugsy's Girls.
Dick: "Mugsy's Girls"?
Laura: Nodding
Dick: What's the nature of it? What's it about?
Laura: It's sort of a female "Animal House". It's a really cute-
Dick: HA!
Laura: It's funny, yeah
Dick: You and Ruth Gordon?! This I ought to see. Alright, now, but, if the opportunity comes along, and they begin pursuing you. Will you go more into that?
Laura: Yes. I definately want to do both. I'm um, up for some films right now. And, uh... but, you know I have a summer tour set up. It's a great tour, and um, I'll be doing that this summer.
Dick: And, now hold on to that a minute. I want to stay with this one last subject. You're not ill prepared for acting? You did act before, or study it?
Laura: I studied in uh, in a acting school, right out of high school. That's what I started, and my voice sort of lead me here. To your show.
Dick: Into this madness, and things are going well. Alright. Let's talk about the summer tour. Will it be a US tour, Canadian, a Would tour... what?
Laura: It'll be all of the United States. I just got back from Europe, doing a promotional tour. And, the record's breaking there, finally. Um, it will be all of the United States. We'll start down in Florida, we'll go north, south, east and west. And, we'll probably do Canada. And, then we come back here, and we'll do, August the 11th, to the Greek. And, um, I'll do the Phillharmonic.
Dick: No, for the benefit of anybody who doesn't really.... "The Greek" is a theatre, and outdoor, gorgeous theare. And, then you'll do what? the Phillharmonic?
Laura: The Phillharmonic, yeah.
Dick: Would you sing another song?
Laura: Sure
Dick: What will it be?
Laura: Satisfaction.
Dick: (Feeling her sleeve) What is this made out of?
Laura: Ummmm...?
Dick: Where's the salivating young man. Come here a minute.
What is your name, sir?
Young man: Saddy
Dick: Saddy... now, be careful. (lift's Laura's arm/sleeve to him) Just touch this.
Saddy: Ooo, it's...
Dick: (pushing Sandy away) Back, Saddy. Back!
Ladies and gentleman, Laura Branigan!
