Emma Martin - Better Times Will Come (Janis Ian)

Emma Martin is a Scottish artist currently living in Glasgow. Brought up in Dundee, granddaughter of a weaver, she’s connected to that history by creating a collection of songs about the Jute Mills of Dundee. Looking at the weavers and their work from different points of view – the women themselves, the very young children who worked there instead of going to school to help feed their families, the hardships and triumphs, the songs are all written in Old Scots. One of them, “Kettle Bilers”, won the Hands Up Trad Scots Song writing award. She comes to this project as a fervent believer in community and the power of music to raise awareness. In keeping with the project’s international scope, she’s made a slight translation to the lyrics here and there, adding in some old Scots – so “Learns to live as one” becomes “Kens tae bide as one” and so forth.
Hey, any video that features a good vocalist, a fiddler, a dog, and a penguin is good in my book!
