Ptazeta - MFD - Live Performance | Vevo DSCVR Artists To Watch 2023

It’s no secret that reggaeton is guilty of falling into some heteronormative tropes. Ptazeta aims to shatter that mold. Crashing the party in 2019, her “Mami” debut was an elegant urbano track that flipped the genre’s typical sultriness into a lesbian love letter. Sung by a woman, the lyrics “Mami y yo pa ti/Estoy haciendo cash pa volar de aquí'' subvert the ol’ sugar papi vibe. Turns out audiences were thirsty for such representation; “Mami '' went platinum, and the Canary Islands had a budding star in one of its own. Ptazeta’s music has an atomic energy, yanking listeners into her world. Sometimes, the sandy beaches of her home are the destination, like on “Déjate Ser'' and “Cae la noche.” (Thank her inventive production partner Juacko for those tropical trips.) Other times, and these moments are most impressive, Ptazeta becomes a rhyme master. She showed off her rapping skills early on with “Be Yourself” and “Lo Que Vivo.” But it was last year’s fiery session at the famed Bizarrap studio that really woke the dragon. After exhaling a cloud of blunt smoke, she spits 150 seconds of inferno with a sly sparkle in her eye. The video quickly went viral, racked up more than 90 million views to date, melted plenty of faces, and had surely had people asking “Who is this girl with the snake face-tat and how did she get so much swag?” The answer lies in her identity as an LGBTQIA+ artist. In interviews, she stresses that she’s alway believed in being her true self. “I understand that a lot of people have a hard time finding themselves, but for me, it’s natural to sing to people of my same-sex,” she wisely states. “That’s just who I am, if not I would be lying.” Along with her skills, that attitude earned her an Artist to Watch invite. With the studio properly fireproofed, she burned through “Mala Mala '' and “MFD,” which has a particularly cool intro. Ptazeta really knows how to make it personal.
