Pink Martini - Kikuchiyo to mohshimasu | Live from Portland - 2005

Excerpted from Pink Martini's concert DVD release "Discover the World," this performance was filmed live in concert at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall in Portland Oregon on December 31, 2005, featuring vocalists Timothy Nishimoto and China Forbes, with Masumi Timson on the koto. Pink Martini's version of "Kikuchiyo to mohshimasu" was originally heard on the band's second album, Hang on Little Tomato. The song was written in Japanese and the original version was released by the great Hiroshi Wada & Mahina Stars as a single in Japan in 1964. Oregon-based koto player Masumi Timson has performed this song with Pink Martini at important venues worldwide, including the Hollywood Bowl. The song also features Dan Faehnle on guitar.

LYRICS (English translation from the Japanese)

Her name was Kikuchiyo
Across the nape of her porcelain neck
The blue light of the nightclub swayed
I held her as we danced
I felt her gentle shoulders
Tremble
Why this sadness... why this sadness?

I wish it could have gone on forever
The two of us passing time in Akasaka
In a hotel on that misty night
We spent the night in passion
And then
The blush of her tender cheeks
Turned to tears... lonely tears

Her name was Kikuchiyo
She told me to forget everything
And after our only night together
She vanished
Leaving only her scent
Which lingered softly
In the fog... in the fog

Her name was Kikuchiyo

Kikuchiyo to mohshimasu
