The ache that floated through “One Of These Days,” the title track of an EP that arrived last summer, proved that Sophia Scott was gonna take a big ride pretty soon. That kind of emotional power is a telling signpost. The Colorado native with the heart-on-sleeve approach to ballads had suggested this in her earlier tracks, singing about only needing “lipstick and moonlight,” not the entire romantic trap, in “White Fence,” and standing up for herself, even during a moment of sorrow, in “She Ain’t Me.” Then of course there’s her drinking EP, ‘Pour Decisions,’ which has wine, not love, on its mind. Scott’s a modern country singer who knows that a little pop can’t hurt in the earworm department, so when comparisons to Shania Twain arrive during the Sophia conversation, they’re not too far off base. Catchy is as catchy does (it’s not every twang-centric vocalist that would green-light a feature on an Iggy Azalea track like “Sex On The Beach”) and LA figures into her sound as much as Music City does. Her ‘Barstool Confessions’ debut reveals that she likes to rock a bit, too. When she got to our studio for a spin through the tender “Watering Roses,” it was back to ballads time. Revealing her vulnerability, the guitar and voice performance hits hard. Definitely put Sophia on your list.
