Throwback to this 1996 stint on Letterman. Everybody thinks “Get Out Of This House” is a divorce song. It isn’t! In fact, it is a buyer’s remorse song, inspired by the purchase of my first home. One day, while trying to write, I looked out my window at Lake Austin and felt guilty that I wasn’t awestruck by the view or riding a bike up the hill on my street. Oh why oh why had I left New York?? Now I had a bloody mortgage! Renting had been easy! I couldn’t walk to a deli! My neighbors were doctors and lawyers! It was QUIET! Horror! So there you have it. If anything, I was chastising myself for being so dumb. And now, 27 years later, where am I? Austin, of course!
