Aisling Gheal & Spórt - Luka Bloom

This is a track from my new record Out of the Blue, to be released on March 1st.
The track has 2 iconic pieces of music to me, joined together.
The first is Aisling Gheal.
It is an astonishing song, which I have been listening to for many years.
I believe Iarla O’Lionaird has recorded the song 3 times; the first being as a young boy.
It is a deep song and it goes right into me, every time I hear it sung.
Challenging my self in the year of Covid, to step outside the ‘comfort zone’ of my own work, I decided to have a go at Aisling Gheal.
Listening to Iarla’s version over and over, I wrestled with the guitar for weeks, every day, trying to find my way in.
And once I got into the song; the next trick was to get out of the way, and let the song shine, minus the words….
This is followed by Spórt, composed by the one and only Peadar O’Riada.
I heard this tune many many years ago. In Peadar’s recording, there is a child singing the tune. It is utterly haunting.
During the mid 90's I used Peadar’s version of his tune as walk-on music for my gigs. So, if you were at Pink Pop in Holland or Torhout\Werchter in Belgium, the child’s voice singing this tune was what you heard, before, and during the walk onstage.
Finally I have learned it; it is a joy to play.
Thank you Iarla and thank you Peadar.
Out of the Blue will be released on March 1st on www.lukabloom.com
