“The album ends with a river, the Casamance, in the area of Gambia south of Senegal. Each river is a witness to the passage of time. We recorded the song in the open air, which is a great way of getting a different kind of sound, getting the natural sounds of animals, birds and insects, especially at night. The melody comes from musicians who play the Kora, which has its origins as an instrument close to this area, and it reflects very much what I think when I think of this part of the world, the geography of the region. Many of my songs are about being by the water, reflecting the sounds and movement of water, the calm and storm of water, how water is the voice of being, and water is where the album begins and ends. By the water, which is vital for all form of life, which is soft but powerful, and which creates a new path over time to get where it needs to go. No water, no life. No music, no life.”
