Pink Martini - Gong xi | Portland, Oregon - 2020

Excerpted from Pink Martini's virtual 2020 New Year's Eve concert, filmed at Pink Martini World Headquarters in Portland, Oregon, and broadcast on December 31, 2020. "Gong xi (Congratulations)" is the band's first song in Mandarin, and is a song celebrating Chinese New Year. It was first heard on Pink Martini's holiday album, "Joy to the World," and features a duet with vocalists China Forbes and Timothy Nishimoto, with guitar accompaniment by Dan Faehnle. The song was written by Chen Gexin.

English translation of the lyrics:

On every avenue and in every lane
On every person’s lips
The first thing people say when they see you is
“Congratulations, congratulations
congratulations, congratulations to you!”

Winter has reached its last,
This is really good news
A warm spring wind is about to revive the land
“Congratulations, congratulations
Congratulations, congratulations to you!”

The silvery ice will melt away
We’ll watch the plum trees blossom
When this endless night is over
We’ll hear the rooster’s crow usher in the dawn
“Congratulations, congratulations
Congratulations, congratulations to you!”

We’ve been through so much hardship
We’ve endured so many struggles
So many hearts have been longing
Longing for news of spring
“Congratulations, congratulations
Congratulations, congratulations to you!”
