How to Be Cool, Featuring Gary Glitter as (Larry Larkin) is a TV series from Britain's Granada Television network that adapts and puts a spin a novel written by Philip Pullman. It's the late eighties, and fashion, art and music have become boring and conservative. Despite everything they do, Whizz (William Ilkley) Jacob (David Keyes) and Sarah (Sandra Gough) can't change peoples' ideas about style at their school. Jacob soon discovers a strange man (Roger Daltrey) lurking around the grounds, who appears to talk to himself as he moves from classroom to classroom. Whizz and Sarah join Jacob's investigation, and the three teens discover that the dark character is actually a government agent who's communicating with his superiors. After Whizz uses some high-tech sound equipment to bug the agent's conversations, the teens discover that a government organization exists, which controls the way young adults dress and what music they listen to. It's also revealed that every time a teenager tries to introduce something new into society that the agency finds inappropriate, the government intervenes. The three rebel teenagers must now come up with a good plan to beat the government agent at his own game.
