I started writing this song in April of 2020, right in the first stages of the pandemic shutdown. I had some time to reflect on the pace of my life over the past 20 years. Traveling, touring, reaching for the next great adventure and hoping for the next big thing and wondering if that was really the goal, or more simply put, is that what makes me happy?

Having a moment to reflect, coupled with the uncertainty and unrest going on in the world, got me thinking about the idea of living life more uncluttered and clear, both of mind and spirit.

In essence, I wanted to express that I was and am really thankful for everything I have in my life, and writing this song was really just taking a moment to take stock of all of the little things that really matter and make up a life worth living.

It took me almost a year to finish the song after I started writing it.

Simple Things
Ed Jurdi/Gordy Quist

Lately, I’ve been asked some questions
To things that don’t have answers, it keeps me up at night
On a highwire, the world below is on fire
And I can’t seem to get there in time to put it out

Hope can hold us all together, but not forever
What can I do about it now?

Getting by on simple things, letting go of material dreams
Search for quiet in my mind
Take a minute look up at the stars, go for glory on the air guitar
Step outside, find my voice and sing
Pleasure In simple things

I took for granted, little special moments
Lit up and fade like fireflies in the early summer nights
Drinking cheerwine and laughing with my daughter
Dancing round the backyard and losing track of time

Love will hold us all together, maybe forever
What can I do about it now?

Getting by on simple things, letting go of material dreams
Search for quiet in my mind
Take a minute look up at the stars, go for glory on the air guitar
Step outside, find my voice and sing
Pleasure In simple things

There’s a few things that I know for certain
Didn’t take the questions for me to figure out
It’s the small things, the hope you share and the love you bring
Not chandeliers or diamond rings
Don’t ever have a doubt

Getting by on simple things, letting go of material dreams
Search for quiet in my mind
Take a minute look up at the stars, go for glory on the air guitar
Step outside, find my voice and sing
Pleasure In simple things

Getting by on simple things
Getting by on simple things
