Gigi Perez - Fable | Vevo DSCVR
For some, Gigi Perez first exploded into the hearts and minds of indie fans in 2021 with “Sometimes (Backwood).” Others had a similar experience last year and up to now with “Sailor Song.” Plenty of things bind the two songs together: a far away acoustic guitar strummed as if by a ghost, Perez’ tactile low-end register, passionate-yet-contained lyricism, and the fact that clips of both tracks first exploded on TikTok. Yet, Gigi herself has lived a lifetime in those three years. The West Palm Beach native has been signed to a major label, broken up with said label, and gotten picked up by another, Island Records. She’s battled online trolls who expected her to change the lyrics of “Sailor Song,” while at the same time becoming a bastion for the LGBTQ+ community by famously saying that her art, no one’s art, in fact, “is a democracy.” Songwriting, which she’s been doing since she became "obsessed" with the craft at age 16, is first and foremost for herself. “2025 is looking to be an insane year,” she told us on the DSCVR set, where she performed her latest single, “Fable.” “My first album is coming out, and I’ve dreamed of my first album since I can remember.” If that’s not exciting enough, there’s another Gigi DSCVR performance on the way soon…
