Jon Foreman - The Story Behind "Red And Gold"

"Hearts like compass to guide us"

This song came to me in my hometown during my favorite time of day: the golden hour. As the light began to fade I found myself up on a hill overlooking the freeway with the ocean in the distance. And as the first few stars of the night sky began to appear, the brake lights and headlights grew brighter and brighter in the darkness. At night, Southern California freeways are a duotone ribbon of red and gold, millions of moving vehicles heading to millions of suburban homes.

I always think of the transient Californian motorist as a metaphor for a larger journey: hoping and hungry and thirsting for more than just suburbia. A lost, longing, lonely, postmodern sojourner hoping for something more transcendent than asphalt and stucco.

This song attempts to connect two journeys with one melody. Singing of the ancient fold of fingers in twilight along with the traffic. Intertwining the mundane of the freeway with the sublime of the ageless stars above. If you’re looking for it, you’ll see: there’s always a larger journey underway.

Departures releases in full exactly ONE WEEK from today and I can't wait for you to hear the rest of it!

Lyrics:
Red and gold
Your skin in the half-light
The ancient fold
Of fingers in twilight
The night takes hold
The sunset is kneeling down

Red and gold
The evening is blushing
The city glows
The traffic and rushing
Of thirsty souls
Hungry for meaning and love

With hearts like a compass to guide us
Like fire inside of us
Leading us home

So hold your faith
You're not alone here
Stay your pace
You're almost home
We’re on our way
We're on our way home
We’re on our way
We're on our way home

Red and gold
Of twilight electric
Of ember coals
Wide eyes are reflective
Of fear and hope
Waves of the life in our lungs

Red and gold
The freeway is breathing
The day is told
But what is the meaning
The stars unfolds
The fire of a million suns

Heart beats like thunder
Inside us
Our wonder will guide us
And lead our way home

So hold your faith
You're not alone here
Stay your pace
You're almost home
We’re on our way
We're on our way home
We’re on our way
We're on our way home
