A preview of Inventions / Reinventions, a new project in which I play Bach's Inventions sequentially and improvise inventions of my own for the missing keys. This video is from one of the first live performances of the project, in Paris, back in October 2019.

Here I'm improvising an invention in C# Major. I'm making up every aspect of this music in the moment, but there's a discipline to it: I'm following the logic behind Bach’s original pieces, in which simple musical ideas, like characters in a novel or a play, are taken on a harmonic journey to foreign keys before returning home.
