Dirtmusic’s journey has been one of twists and turns. What began as a singer-songwriter collective, morphed into the three acclaimed albums the founding duo of Hugo Race (Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds) and Chris Eckman (The Walkabouts) created with collaborators in Mali (Tamikrest, Samba Toure). In 2018, the group was enlarged to include Murat Ertel from Istanbul legends Baba Zula and the resultant album “Bu Bir Ruya” and its combination of pulsing electronics and global psych textures, was recognized as a breakthrough. The group’s new 2-song single Hum Hum (+ Western Lands) retains the lineup of Ertel/Eckman/Race and pushes the moody atmospherics and political critique to the next level.
Hugo Race – the main vocalist on Hum Hum tells us this about the track: “we (Dirtmusic) reacted to the loss of connection during lockdown by making two long tracks over the space of two years. These border crossings of the mind, developed in isolation, were a new approach for a band that is all about being physically present. Hum is an ancient word for ‘we’, ‘all of us’, that recognizes no matter what is happening in the world, we are all separate and one at the same time. Even if it sounds dark, I think of Hum Hum as a white magic spell, a salt circle, a mantra summoning us back together again.”
