One of the highlights of our new CD ‘Love’, is that we’ve finally decided to share some solo performances. This week, our blonde bombshell Kate Mullins takes centre stage with a beautiful rendition of Cotton Eyed Joe.

“I chose to do a trio arrangement of this song for solo gigs after hearing it on a Nina Simone compilation album called "The Tomato Collection". Her version is so achingly beautiful, so hauntingly poignant and I thought I just had to give it a go!

I've always liked the idea of grabbing people's attention within the first few seconds of opening your mouth; of giving people that "whaaaat?!" moment, where they second guess what song it is, they think they already know, and then you flip it on its head by framing it in an entirely different way.

We do it a lot in the Puppini Sisters with arrangements such as "Wuthering Heights" and "I Will Survive", which are all about creating that penny-drop moment and it's a really engaging vehicle to play with as a performer.

With this arrangement of "Cotton Eyed Joe", I wanted our brilliant guitarist Martin to open with a long, protracted, beautiful scene-setting introductory solo, lulling the audience into a false sense of serene security with his gorgeous playing, and then hitting them with the first line "Where did you come from, where did you go? Where did you come from, Cotton Eye Joe?", a line now so widely known because of the abysmally catchy Rednex dance version of the ‘90s...

We then continue on this soaring, elegant journey through a totally different version of the song and I think it has a real impact because of this juxtaposition.

I chose this song because I liked it, it's as simple as that really; it's only more recently that I've investigated the origins of the song in more detail and found out what a rich and varied evolution it's had.

The version you hear me sing today is nothing like the original, composed, whittled, and passed down by black slaves, toiling on the plantations of the deep south of America. But it's always been a song of love, and a beautiful love song it remains for me today. ” - 𝓚𝓪𝓽𝓮 𝓜𝓾𝓵𝓵𝓲𝓷𝓼
