Jonatha Brooke - Hide & Seek

TBT 2004. Los Angeles. I found a few hidden rarities when I was poring through the JB archives this week. This song is called “Hide and Seek”. I had gotten a head’s up from a friend at Fox that there was a De Niro movie coming out. A thriller, creepy, scary. It needed an end title song. I got to see an early cut of the trailer. This tune came rushing out.

I recorded it with Ryan Freeland at @stampedeorigin. I sang as close to the mic as I could, as softly as I could. You can hear (somewhat annoyingly!) every crinkle of mouth noise. Ryan’s out of tune toy piano was perfectly creepy for the melodic motifs. I put my acoustic guitar in a weird tuning with a half capo. I offset little mellotron clusters into the haunting of the Electric guitar base. As I recall, we had a blast.

In the end, I think John Ottman scored the whole thing. I never heard back from Fox. But that’s pretty typical. The movie was a bit of a bust too.

I still think this song would have been the bomb diggity as the credits rolled!

It is my favorite creepy endeavor to date! And Kellie Lin Knott made a killer little lyric video just for us.

Happy almost 2022.
