Trans-Pan Dance (Part 2) by Steven Halpern featuring IASOS

Iasos and I met at the Comet Kohoutek festival in San Francisco in 1973, and became immediate soul brothers. We hung out, but never played music together.

When I booked my first weekend in a newly opened professional recording studio, I spontaneously invited him to join me, and he accepted. We had no time to rehearse. As he set up his flute and foot pedals, I began to tell him what key I’d be playing in. He said, “Don’t tell me. Just start playing, and I’ll come in when I’m ready.”

As we improvised together, I recall being so entranced with what he played that I could barely keep my fingers on the keyboard. His harmonized voice/flute melodies blew me away and are as magical now as ever.

Friends til the end, we were in touch after the Maui fires, and discussed collaborating on new music. Like everyone else, I was shocked when I got the news of his passing. His legacy lives on through his music.
