The Badlands are a landscape of ridges and canyons, carved by water and wind and washed in striations of color. We camped overnight, planning to film in the morning. At 4am, we woke to the van swaying like a boat against heavy winds that had blown in. We began packing up, working to clear the thick layer of sand and dirt that now coated everything. As we stood at the edge of the grassland, the wind died down suddenly, leaving a landscape swept clean in the morning sun. It was the set that almost didn’t happen.
