Creativity for emotional health

Purpose
To save your life

We all need purpose
To be a foundation of hope
And a connection with faith to see us through

I read an article about suicidal ideation
And how it’s way up with our young
And so it made think how important finding your purpose is
And holding onto it when you do

And to look at finding your voice
And will to create
As is vital and
life or death
as breathing
Or eating
In other words not as an optional activity
But something you do and reach for
To save your spirits life
And perhaps saving your life’s life as well

Many were and are critical about natural health modalities not being promoted to humanity en mass
The idea that every solution comes in a pill or a jab
Rather than
Diet and exercise and life style choices of that nature

I think the same thing could be said for creativity
And purpose
Regarding emotional and mental health

Engaging in creativity is like taking a jog for your soul

And to fuel the engine of motivation in that direction
Finding a purpose within that is important as well

To learn to value the movements of our hearts
And begin to look at creative freedom
As not just being the realm for artists poets and madmen
But a form of mental and emotional health
And signs of a healthy connection to spirit

Too often it’s seen as special activity
For special people

But our nature is to express creatively the movements of our souls

But too many are cut off from those realms
Do you superstition and fear surrounding those
Pursuits

As a singer I’ve heard countless times
People when complimenting me on that skill
Speak over themselves that they don’t have that “talent”

I always tell them anyone can sing
Singing is just sustained talking
To which they usually say
No I’m terrible at it
You don’t want to hear me sing
And they usually laugh to keep it light

But I know the truth is
That that’s just a story they’ve told themselves
And something they’ve turned into a reality
Through the repetition of that belief and the power of those negative words

I understand that some people are more talented than others

But what we think of as talent
Is often more the manifestation of need
Pointing in the direction of a certain skill
And then hard work pointed in that direction

I’m also not saying that there aren’t limitations
Or that everyone who engages In creativity
Needs to make it an absolute obsession

But to look at it more as healthful practices aimed at our spirits and our souls
The way we look at exercise as healthful practice for our bodies
And minds
I think is a helpful shift in perspective

Imagine a world where people were encouraged widely to exercise
And be creative as a matter of course
To stay in physical
Mental and emotional health
Without the hangover of fear and outsized judgment
Especially in the realm of artistic creation

Everyone has a song to sing
But most won’t giver their voice permission to sing it

To sustain their talking and allow expression to graduate to melody
Where the soul can run free

These are dark times
And the realms where people find purpose
And meaning in this life are being shrouded and even demonized
We are told that the solutions are out there somewhere
In a pill or a product

So many are trying to sell us a solution
But the answer to the break down of humanity’s soul
Mind and body

Can often be found
In denying access to activities of expression

Are you telling yourself a limiting story
Have you let fear win so long
That it’s rooted itself falsely into your identity ?

Do you tell yourself you have a terrible voice
When the idea to sing presents itself

If so
I bet that’s a lie
I bet you can sing
And I bet you have a song that only you have
That needs to be sung
