A leitmotif in music: A recurring musical theme/melody appearing in i.a. operas, symphonic poems and film scores. It is used to reinforce the dramatic action and to provide a connection to certain characters, objects, locations and other superordinate topics. In a purely musical sense the repetition or transformation of the theme also gives cohesion to large-scale works.
