“The resurrection of Christ, and the resurrection of all who are in Christ, was the sustaining power of Paul’s song in suffering...” – John Piper, from the Sing! Conference 2019
How can we sing through suffering? Picture Paul and Silas in jail at Philippi. They have been stripped, beaten, and mocked. Their feet are locked in stocks. Their faithfulness to Christ’s call has landed them in the inner prison, and they are sleepless at midnight. Yet, they sing. In the darkness, through this painful trial, they lift prayers and hymns to the Savior -- hymns they must have known by heart.
In this sermon clip from the Sing! Conference 2019, John Piper reflects on this story from Acts 16 with piercing honesty: too often we do not sing during our trials. We grumble instead. And yet our sighs can be transformed into songs, for the same power that fueled Paul and Silas’s hymn in the night is at work in us: the power of the resurrection of Christ. Because Christ is risen, we are never alone. Because Christ lives, our suffering for the gospel is never in vain. Because Christ conquered the grave, we can look ahead in confidence and know that we too will rise. That is why millions of believers around the globe continue to sing, even amidst the deepest trials. We have tasted the power of the resurrection.
