Alhaji Waziri Oshomah – Ovini Omoekeke Alhaji Inu Umoru (Official Music Video)

"World Spirituality Classics 3: The Muslim Highlife of Alhaji Waziri Oshomah" is out September 23. Pre-order now: https://luakabop.lnk.to/Waziri.

Alhaji Waziri Oshomah begins his sermon before a dancing crowd. His lyrics are urging you to stay on the straight and narrow—though there’s nothing straight and narrow about this beat.

We’re in a small part of Edo State in southern Nigeria called Afemailand, which is known for being a harmonious region where Muslims and Christians live—and dance—together.

Waziri wrote this song as a dedication to an important member of his community (his name is in the title, in case you missed that part). With a rolling hook on his keyboard, he strikes his signature balance of Etsako/Afemai folk styles with pan-Nigerian highlife and pop to create a sublime vehicle for his Islamic philosophy—and to compare Alhaji Inu Umoru’s strength to that of an elephant:

“People who are truthful and honest in life are better than those who embezzle wealth for themselves. No animal in the jungle can ever overrun the strength of an elephant.”
