This Is the Christ

Music: Michael F. Moody
Text: James E Faust and Jan Pinborough
Arrangement: Barlow Bradford

“This is the Christ” takes as its theme the witness of the Apostle Simon Peter, who affirmed to Jesus, “Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.” (Matthew 16:16) That scriptural account inspired lyrics by Latter-day Saint leader James E. Faust with the assistance of Utah-based author Jan Pinborough, and those words were set to music in 1995 by Michael F. Moody, and American composer and sacred music specialist. “This Is the Christ,” which encourages the faithful today to declare Christ’s divinity with the same assurance as Saint Peter, has since been translated and published in 22 other languages. The arrangement heard here, by Barlow Bradford, dates from 2003 and was written especially for the Choir’s Consider the Lilies album.

(Lyrics)
They heard His voice, a voice so mild,
It pierced them through and made their souls to quake;
They saw Him come, a man in white,
The Savior who had suffered for their sake.
They felt the wounds in hands an side,
And each could testify;
This is the Christ;

This is the Christ, the holy Son of God,
Our Savior, Lord, Redeemer of mankind.
This is the Christ, the healer of our souls
Who ransomed us with love divine.

I read His words, the words He prayed
While bearing sorrow in Gethsemane;
I fe4el His love, the price He paid
How many drops of blood were spilled for me?
With saints of old in joyful cry
I too can testify;
This is the Christ:

This is the Christ, the holy Son of God,
Our Savior, Lord, Redeemer of mankind.
This is the Christ, the healer of our souls
Who ransomed us with love divine.
