MUSIC & TEXT: Leonard Bernstein
ARRANGEMENT: Mack Wilberg

In 1950, Leonard Bernstein was asked to write lyrics and music for an adaptation of J. M. Barrie’s beloved play Peter Pan. By the time the production opened on Broadway, though, Bernstein’s instrumental cues had been cut, and only five of his songs remained. “My House,” one of the songs kept in the original production, is sung by Wendy to the Lost Boys as they offer to build a house for their “new mother.” She teaches them that besides sturdy walls and a secure roof, a home needs to be built with faith, truth, peace, and love.

Lyrics:
Make my house of wood,
Build my house of stone,
Build my house of brick and mortar;
Make the ceiling strong,
Strong against the storm,
Shelter when the days grow shorter;
But make my house of love,
And paint my house with trusting,
And warm it with the warmth of your heart;
Make the floor of faith,
Make the walls of truth,
Put a roof of peace above;
Only build my house of love.
