Girl in Red's 'We Fell in Love in October' Gets October Bump, Records Best-Ever Streaming Week

It's not quite on the popularity level of Earth, Wind & Fire's "September" yet, but an indie singer/songwriter is laying an early claim to having created a new autumn perennial.

"we fell in love in october," a 2018 single from Norwegian DIY star girl in red (real name: Marie Ulven), has long been a streaming success, having racked up over 126 million global plays on Spotify alone. But the song has seen a distinct and consistent rise in on-demand streams since the calendar turned to its title month.

Over the first nine days of October, "love" notched a total of 3.2 million on-demand streams in the U.S., or an average of 357,000 streams a day, according to numbers provided by Nielsen Music/MRC Data. That's a 33% rise from the 2.4 million U.S. on-demand streams the song combined for (269,000 per day) over the final nine days of September. For the week ending Oct. 8, it amassed 2,487,000 U.S. on-demand streams, marking easily the song's biggest overall streaming week to date.

And the bump isn't due to one huge day and diminishing returns from there -- the song has amassed daily U.S. on-demand stream counts between 326,000 and 373,000 in each of those first nine days of October, after not breaking 300,000 for a single day in the period before that. (It's also made Spotify's U.S. Daily top 200 chart six times this month, with the highest ranking coming at No. 173 on Oct. 12.)

It's not the first year that the song has thrived at this point in the season, either. In 2019, the song debuted on Billboard's Hot Rock & Alternative Songs listing at No. 50 on the chart dated Oct. 5, eventually climbing to a peak of No. 14 on Oct. 26. (The song began to slide once the calendar turned to November, but it still spent 20 total weeks on the chart, through February 2020.)

"We fell in love in October/ That's why I love fall," girl in red sings about her relationship on the recurring streaming hit. It looks like she may now have a second reason.
