Latin Artist on the Rise: Nicki Nicole Goes From Rapping in the Streets of Argentina to Latin Grammy Nominee

Argentine trap artist Nicki Nicole is up for best new artist at this year's Latin Grammys, sharing the eclectic category with heavy-hitter Anuel AA and fellow Argentine trap artist Cazzu, among others.

The nod puts a spotlight on the 20-year-old newcomer, who has been turning heads for her slick rapping skills and fusion R&B and Latin trap. While she's not a household name for many, she's been recording music for the past three years, has charted on the Billboard Argentina 100 chart, and is a standout in Argentina's trap scene, with songs including the uptempo "Colocao" and her latest single "Mala Vida."

Featured in our On the Rise panel during Latin Music Week, Nicki Nicole started freestyling in the streets of Argentina in her teen years when trap artist Duki took notice and posted about her on his social media: "We have a new boss in town."

"When I saw what Duki posted and listened to her music, I went crazy and signed her instantly," said Federico Lauría, founder of Dale Play Records and Nicki Nicole's manager. "All these artists come from the same place -- the streets -- but they’re all doing something different."

Whether she takes home the Latin Grammy for best new artist, Nicki Nicole is one to watch. Learn more about this week’s Latin Artist on the Rise below.

The Argentine artist pushed back the release of her new album this year due to the pandemic and hopes to be able to release it next year. "Once this is all over. Either way, I'm focused more than ever on creating new music."
