Cyn Toasts the 'Promising Young Woman' Soundtrack With 'Drinks' & 'Uh-Oh': Listen

Capitol Records will release the movie soundtrack on Dec. 4 before the movie officially hits theaters Dec. 25.

Cyn toasts the upcoming mystery drama Promising Young Woman with her new song "Drinks," released Friday (March 6), which is the lead single from the film's forthcoming soundtrack.

Update (Nov, 13): Cyn's second song for the soundtrack, "Uh-Oh," is also out now. Additionally, Capitol Records will now release the movie soundtrack on Dec. 4 before the movie officially hits theaters Dec. 25 (it was originally set to be released in April).

"Drinks" combines sassy lyricism that teeter-totters between speaking and singing, a moody production fitting for the film's revenge-seeking protagonist Cassandra "Cassie" Thomas (played by Carey Mulligan), and a meticulous flow between sweet high notes embracing a carefree girls' night out and a sour message for the boy she's blowing off with a memorable refrain: "He got mad, so I got drinks."

"'Drinks' is a song that started off as a joke, ‘he got mad, so I got drinks,'" Cyn said in a press statement. "I knew as soon as I said it, the line would find its way into a chorus. Upon watching the movie, Promising Young Woman, I felt more inspired to finish my song. The chorus was written before I saw the movie, and the verses were written in consideration of the movie -- knowing that may make a listening experience a little more interesting."

Mulligan's main character is anything but a Promising Young Woman like the movie title suggests after she pretends to be a damsel in distress who's had one too many drinks and distresses would-be rapists who fall for her nightly schemes.

"'Drinks' and the movie complement one another thematically," Cyn continued. "For example, both pieces reveal moments of friendship, allegiance, hardship, strength, and of course, pose scenarios where drinks are acquired. I am so excited and thankful for the opportunity to contribute to such an incredible soundtrack."

The Promising Young Woman Official Soundtrack features Cyn's "Drinks" and second single "Uh Oh" with 13 other tracks by female artists and Anthony Willis' chilling reimagining of Britney Spears' "Toxic" for the score.

A remix of Charli XCX’s “Boys,” Paris Hilton’s “Stars Are Blind,” Sky Ferreira’s “Downhill Lullaby” and Juice Newton’s “Angel of the Morning” are among the soundtrack's already existing femme pop gems, but a precious portion of the female-led project pays tribute to decade-spanning anthems. Carmen DeLeon covers the controversial “He Hit Me (And It Felt Like a Kiss)," which was written by Gerry Goffin and Carole King for The Crystals in 1962; DeathbyRomy breathes new life into The Weather Girls' original recording of “It’s Raining Men" from 1982; and Donna Missal puts her own spin on Cigarettes After Sex’s 2012 breakthrough single “Nothing’s Gonna Hurt You Baby.”

"I spent my childhood growing up on incredible soundtracks -- Romeo + Juliet, Clueless, Can't Hardly Wait and Empire Records saw me through every crush, heartbreak and schoolyard humiliation," said Emerald Fennell, the film's executive soundtrack producer, in a press release. "I never dreamed one day I'd be holding the soundtrack to my own film. Getting to work with Capitol on this record has truly been the most exciting process of all time and collaborating with so many unbelievably talented female artists has been magical. I'm so, so grateful to everyone involved."
