Benjamin Scheuer - SEE MY HEROES (Live at RAK Studios, London)

SEE MY HEROES. In this song, I talk directly to my guitar playing hero, Eddie Van Halen, who died of an illness that I managed to survive: Cancer. My dad introduced me to Van Halen when I was a kid; Eddie's death made my father's death come roaring back to me.

This song is part of my new solo show, A MOUNTAIN FOR ELODIE, which I'll be performing Aug 4th till 27th 2023, at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland. Tickets on sale now: https://tickets.gildedballoon.co.uk/event/14:4958/

SEE MY HEROES
Driving with my father. I am six years old
When “Eruption” comes erupting from the Volvo’s radio
A six-string revelation; a song without a word
I think: this has gotta be the coolest thing I’ve ever heard
Some kids get a spaceship. Some kids get a pet
My dad gets me 1984 on cassette

So, if anybody asks why I play the way I do
I tell them they can blame it on my father and you
With my guitar, I’m ready for every low and high
But nothing could prepare me to see my heroes

Seventh-fret harmonic; first note you play live
When we come to see the Balance tour. Summer ‘95
As you’re dancing on the notes, I think “that’s something I could do.”
When I tell my father, he says “yeah, I think so, too.”
The memory of that moment helps me through the hardest years
After spring of ‘96, when my dad disappears

So, if anybody asks why I play the way I do
I tell them they can blame it on my father and you
With my guitar, I’m ready for every low and high
But nothing could prepare me to see my heroes die

I am having dinner when I learn you are gone
Sometimes we beat cancer. This time cancer won
I’m grateful to my wife, who doesn’t think I’m being silly
When I put on “Hot for Teacher” and weep into my chili
A quarter-century separates the death of you and him
So why do I feel a small part of my dad has died again?

Oh, if anybody asks why I play the way I do
Tell them they can blame it on my father and you
With my guitar, I’m ready for every low and high
But nothing could prepare me
No, nothing could prepare me
No, nothing could prepare me to see my heroes

If anybody asks why I play the way I do
If anybody asks why I play the way I do
If anybody asks why I play the way I do, see my heroes.
