Māori Ki Te Ao is about standing strong in our identity.
'I AM' was the reclamation of identity.
Māori Ki Te Ao is the knowing of who we are, and where we come from.
It is who I am.
This is my love letter to Tūhoe and to my Tūhoetanga.
This song and video is a representation of just a small portion of who we are as Tūhoe.
This is where we come from and who we have become.
My hearts desire for our kaupapa is that no matter where we come from or who we come from, that we continue to know we are incredible, that we are more than good enough.
That we are powerful.
That we can just be.
I am but one person. I am not the representation of our iwi or of our hapū. But I am Tūhoe nonetheless.
This is a collective kaupapa of nga uri o Ngai Tūhoe. Mana Māori Motuhaki. Tūhoe ki te ao. Te reo Māori ki te ao ✊🏾✊🏾✊🏾

Thank you to everyone involved in this waiata. This kaupapa. My uri and I will be forever blessed knowing that this is part of our whakapapa.
Our whānau. Our whārua. Our kainga. Our tikanga. Our taonga. Our culture.

VERSE 1
He Māori ahau
Āke, ake

He taketake
He tuku iho

Ko wai koe
Nā wai koe
Tō mana
He rangatira

CHORUS
Ue
Mahuta mai rā
E tū e
Horahia
Me tuku e
Te reo Māori ki te ao

VERSE 2
He kākano au
I ruia mai
I te kohu e

Whanawhanaua
Te reanga hou
Kei tūpou
BRIDGE
Kei wareware
Ko wai koe
Nā wai koe
Tō mana

CHORUS
Ue
Mahuta mai rā
E tū e

Me tuku e
Te reo Māori ki te ao

MANAWAWERA/HAKA
Moumou rawa mai
Te kai a te rangatira
E noho tahanga noa
Ko te reo he kāpura
Whakahika I te ahikā roa
O te whatumanawa
He pākairiri nanaiore rā
I te kōmata o te pitomata
Tama tū tama ora
Tama noho tama mate
Mahuta, matika
Maranga mai rā

CHORUS
Ue
Mahuta mai rā E tū e
Horahia
Me tuku e
Te reo Māori ki te ao

English translation
Like a grove of kahikatea trees in the forest
The people stand united in the community
Caring for one another
Nurturing human connection
VERSE 1
I am Māori
Forevermore
I am Tūhoe
Self-determined
My language
It is long-established
Inherited
BRIDGE
Lest you forget
Who you are,
Who you’re descended from
Your legacy
Is of nobility

CHORUS
Push
Rise up
Stand up
Spread it far and wide
Release
The Māori language into the world

VERSE 2
I am a seed
Who was sown
In the mist
And sprang up Multiply
The new generation
Keep your head raised

BRIDGE
Lest you forget
Who you are
Who you’re descended from
Your legacy
Is of nobility

CHORUS
Push
Rise up
Stand up
Spread it far and wide
Release
The Māori language into the world

MANAWAWERA/HAKA
Wasted indeed
Our noble language would be
Merely left idle
The language like a flame
Ignites the enduring fire
Of the soul
It is armor that shields
Fostering true potential
To take action is to live
To hesitate is to die
Rise, stand up
Be upright

CHORUS
Push
Rise up
Stand up
Spread it far and wide
Release
The Māori language into the world
