Tattoo Lady Songwriting Course

This is a 1st draft of a song I wrote from a songwriter's prompt that I gave to my students at The New England Songwriter's Retreat,
and at my subscription teaching channel for songwriters, the Song Factory Channel.
We had to write a song from the perspective of a circus character. I give a short talk on some of the elements I wrote into the song afterwards, if you are interested.

Tattoo Lady Sept 27th, 2020 0pen G/bass C CGDGBE Capo 2

I am the canvas
A portrait of madness
I let the needle prick my skin
I am a painting
A story in waiting
Turn on the buzz
And let the ink kick in

Chorus
It’s showtime
I’m the Painted Lady
I’m the circus freak
It’s no crime
To gaze at the spectacle
Of my physique

Verse 2
There is a serpent
Drawn with the current
Rising round my calf
My thigh
A likeness Moses
In a sea of roses
Holding his staff to the sky

Bridge
“Ladies and Gentlemen—“
The voice of the ringmaster calls
The tattoo lady
Will now light the fuse
Of the human cannonball
And the lights go down
And there not a sound
It’s just another town

There’s a gangster
He is prankster
Hanging with a pistol
Like a necklace charm
There is a dancer
On my shoulder
I can hold her
When I close my arms
