When one wanders into Reddit and X threads about underrated rappers, Buddy’s name frequently pops up. And for good reason. Dude's got a wildly versatile discography, and lots of cred from peers such as Pharrell, Blxst, and Vince Staples. Back in 2018, the then-24-year-old rhymer was putting the finishing touches on his ambitious ‘Harlan & Alondra' debut. Naming the project after an intersection near his Compton home was a predictor of his detailed storytelling style. Characters enter, beget a little fun or chaos or both, and split. In “Stuck On Central,” listeners’ chests tighten when the cop rolls up after an overheated engine leaves our hero stranded. A catchy interpolation of Skee-Lo’s “I Wish” meshes with a brooding G-funk vibe on that track, but elsewhere on the album one can find pop-trap and Grateful Dead namedrops (“Trippin’” with Khalid), along with disco-funk and a cameo from Mr. West Coast Rap himself, Snoop Dogg (“The Blue”). Boasting an impeccable ear for beats, Buddy continues to widen his scope while remaining a dedicated cypher. 2022’s ‘Superghetto’ is a portrait of community, identity, and all the contradictions within. Now he’s diving inward. ‘Don’t Forget To Breathe’ serves as both a self-mantra and title of his third album. Check those singing skills in this “Free My Mind” performance!. He’ll be flexing those pipes as the opener on Staples’ upcoming tour, and also bringing the chill Cali vibes when the DJ spins “Like This.” Did the word “underrated” cross our minds watching him cruise on the ctrl stage? Yeah, a couple times.
