The Twelve Days of Christmas | Christmas Best

The Twelve Days of Christmas
Music: English carol; Text: Traditional;
addl. text: Frederic Austin
Arrangement: Mack Wilberg

A Christian festival of peace and goodwill that lasts from Christmas to Epiphany dates back at least as early as the 4th century. And Epiphany songs celebrating these “Twelve Days” can be found in England from the 13th century onward. But this most popular of the “Twelve Days” songs is likely to have come originally from France. Various theories have circulated about its origins and meanings, but “The Twelve Days of Christmas” is primarily a playful piece that loses none of its appeal when taken at face value. In that spirit of playfulness, Mack Wilberg’s arrangement includes witty references to the music of Brahms, Offenbach, Tchaikovsky, and other familiar melodies related to the variously-named gifts.
