Dustin Silva was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 14 with a 1400 blood sugar. Following this near death experience, Dustin struggled with uncontrolled sugars for nearly 20 years. In the last decade, mainly due to changes in diet and exercise his blood sugars are under control. He is now on a strictly low carb diet.
Dustin Silva was feeling sick from a 400 blood sugar during this performance and you can feel his discomfort. Among the symptoms of High Blood Sugar are feeling unusually weak and tired as well as a lowered threshold for pain. HBS has also been strongly linked to the mood (feelings) of anger and sadness.
Although Dustin would normally rest under these conditions, the limited time frame to get this recording done resulted in a unique performance. He took an insulin correction, drank water and continued to perform. Contrary to Dustin’s pattern of privacy surrounding his illness. Producer and close friend, Jason A, thought it was important to share the details surrounding the performance and encouraged Silva to include his struggle with type 1 Diabetes with the release of this performance.
As a Guitarist and Singer-Songwriter, Dustin Silva has unique ability to mix virtuositic and aggressive fingerstyle guitar technique with passionate and raw vocals. His songs have been described as a cross between Elliott Smith, Jeff Buckley, Nick Drake and Radiohead.
His long anticipated, debut solo EP was fully released in Sept, 2023. He has released 2 full band singles, Dec/Jan 2024. Both feature the beautiful vocals of Holly Sheehy and the brilliant drumming of Elizabeth Goodfellow, touring drummer for Iron & Wine. Dustin lives in Portland, OR.
