The time spent fruitlessly attempting to assign genres to artists like midwxst would be so much better spent listening to them. Thankfully for the 20-year-old, hordes of cool Gen Z’ers have his product on repeat. Born Edgar Sarratt III and raised in, you guessed it, the Midwest, he never really fit in in his small town. So when his old high school called him to perform at their prom, there’s only one way he could describe it: “that’s some sh*t out of a movie.” So is going bar for bar with SoundCloud titans like Denzel Curry (“Tally”) and Yeat (“LOCK IT UP”). Those collabs def helped boost his rhymer cred, but he’s much more than a spitter of bars. That’s why he personally favors songs like “i know you hate me,” a track that could be called emo-rap until the chorus comes around and a hyper-pop bass synth shatters everything to smithereens. That his latest release “Pretty Girls” starts with crunchy guitar stabs, serves lusty ad-libs in the middle, and closes with a minute-long sax solo definitely ups its replayability. You’ll find a new layer with every spin. It’s also a perfect thesis statement for the Geffen signee’s chameleonic sound. Like what you’re hearing?
