How much cross-genre impact can the esteemed Black Pumas claim? This past year their "More Than a Love Song" was nominated in the Best Rock Performance category at the GRAMMYs - you know, along with Metallica, Foo Fighters, and Arctic Monkeys. The Pumas don't exactly pound as fiercely as those other outfits, but they have a wallop that instantly makes you sit up and notice their work, and they've had it for a long while. Their debut single, 2019's "Colors," boasts an acoustic guitar opening and a Fender Rhodes jazz solo, but its thrust speaks for itself as it pushes everything forward. The Austin-based duo of Eric Burton and Adrian Quesada, whose sound has been deemed "psychedelic soul" by some, have several ways to present themselves, actually. Last fall's sophomore album, 'Chronicles Of A Diamond,' has gorgeous optimism to it, with sunny guitar figures and delicious vocals riding groove after groove. It's the most eloquent statement yet from this can't-be-nailed-down ensemble that the GRAMMYs also nominated for Best New Artist in 2019, the first year of their existence. 'Chronicles' is brimming with the kind of hippie swag that pleases all sorts of fervent listeners (Burton has evidently referred to their live show as "electric church") and "Ice Cream (Pay Phone)" and "Rock and Roll" are two of the album's catchiest tracks. So of course we invited the gents to our studio for a live spin on the new stuff. Blending the strings of two guitars, they gave the song an intimate spin, slightly different from the disc. Don't worry, that slippery falsetto is still on top.
